A dashboard device known as the MIRT (mobile infrared transmitter)
that changes traffic lights from red to green is raising concerns
among police. Once reserved only for emergency police and
fire vehicles, the device is now being sold on the Internet
for as little as $300.
The MIRT works by emitting an infrared beam that reaches
1,500 feet toward a receiver installed at the intersection.
The beam changes the light immediately.
Police are concerned that the device could cause accidents
and confusion at intersections if people try to gain control
of the light.
However, the device appears to be legal, as the infrared
beam doesn’t violate the Federal Communications Commission,
and no laws have been written that apply to the MIRT as of
yet.
